FRIDAY NIGHT
CHESS
CHALLENGE!
***Note*** The Friday Night Chess Challenge is currently on hold while we sort through some personal scheduling issues. Look for a comeback with a bigger and better format very soon!
When: Friday nights starting on September 18
Where: The Asian Library 1339 Baxter St. Charlotte (Corner of Kings and Baxter)
Who: Anyone under the age of 18 who is interested in playing chess and improving their game
The Friday Night Chess Challenge is a perpetual Friday night event in which aspiring young players can get a combination of instruction and real game experience. Starting at 6:15PM Chess Expert Gary Newsom (or occasionally a special guest presenter) will conduct a workshop designed to help young players improve their play. Then at 7PM we let the games begin. All participants will be broken up into groups of 4 according to their current skill levels. They will then play a 3-game "round robin" event against the others in their group. This event will be timed at 30 minutes per player per game and will count toward their national rating. During the tournament, Gary will be available to go over completed games with the players and instruct them individually as time allows. Each section winner receives a medal and everyone participates in the Friday Night Chess Challenge Grand Prix, with trophies awarded in several categories.
What else do I need to know?: All participants must be members of the US Chess Federation. Membership available here. Also available on-site. Registration begins at 6PM and continues until 7PM. Workshop starts at 6:15PM. Event is over no later than 10PM. Entry fee is $15 per player ($10 for additional family members). Bring sets, boards and clocks if you have them.
